Having an emergency preparedness checklist can help you to make sure that you are ready no matter what kind of disaster heads your way.
Do you know when people tend to make the most mistakes? It's when they are under a lot of pressure and time is a factor. Few situations in life meet these two criteria better than being trapped in a disaster situation.
No matter what type of disaster it is, you are going to be under a tremendous amount of pressure. Do you think that this is the best time to be planning how to survive and get your supplies ready? Of course not! You don't want to have to frantically gather together whatever supplies you can get your hands on at the last moment. Instead, you want to make preparations ahead of time when you are calm and have time to make intelligent choices. There are few things worse in the world than realizing you only have minutes to act to save your family, and not knowing what to do.
Every time you turn on the news you probably hear about the fury of Mother Nature. From massive storms to wildfires, earthquakes, and even volcanic eruptions, the world is a dangerous place. In modern society we are all so used to the conveniences, we enjoy that most people don't take the time to realize just how dangerous natural disasters can be. We can't control them or reason with them, all we can do is to do our best to survive. The only way to do that is to prepare ahead of time so that way when a disaster does strike you don't have to waste time thinking, you can just act.
On top of natural disasters, there are a huge number of humanmade disasters that can be just as disruptive, if not more so, to our way of life. From terrorist attacks to an economic collapse, power grid failure, civil unrest and rioting, and even full-scale war there are a lot of threats out there that you need to be aware of. Much like a natural disaster, these are all things that are completely out of control. The only thing you can control is how well prepared you are ahead of time if one of these major disasters strikes.
What you need to remember is that no matter what the cause is, a major disaster can either temporarily or permanently alter the way that we live. There's a good chance the power grid will be knocked out of commission, and when that happens, the food distribution and gasoline distribution system that we have come to depend upon will come to a screeching halt. Then what do you do? If you don't have gas in your car and can't replace it, then you won't be able to travel. If you can't travel, then you are going to be forced to shelter in place. But if you have to shelter in place and there is no food distribution you could be in serious trouble if you don't have any supplies on hand.
The point here is that by being prepared ahead of time, and having an emergency checklist ready, you can give yourself options. Make sure that your car is fueled up and that you have extra gas around so that you can travel if need be. Make sure that you have food, water, and other essential supplies stored in your home in case you have to shelter in place. These are all things that you should be working on ahead of time so that when disaster strikes, you can quickly put a plan for survival into motion.
Keep reading on, and I'll share with you some proven survival tactics that you should understand and know how to employ in the event of a major disaster:
This doesn't mean that you have to walk around feeling depressed like a pessimist would. It simply means that when it comes to the survival of your family, you can never be too prepared. On the other hand, it's far too easy to be underprepared. For example, let's say a major earthquake hits, and it disrupts utilities, food distribution, and gas distribution for a few weeks. If you have survival supplies that are in place to allow you to survive for six months, then you are in great shape and should be just fine. However, if you only have a few weeks’ worth of supplies on hand then you are going to be much more vulnerable should the disaster carry on for longer than anticipated. It's always better to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.
Every home should have a first aid kit just in case someone suffers an injury that is severe enough to warrant medical attention. For example, let’s say one of your kids cuts his finger and is going to need stitches. When that happens most parents panic and frantically looking for a towel or something else to help control the bleeding. This is a perfectly natural reaction, as a parent you care about your kids and the thought of them being hurt can push you to panic. While this is a natural reaction that doesn't mean you can afford to do it. Instead of panicking if you have proper first aid supplies on hand you can bandage the finger before getting in the car and heading to the hospital.
In major disaster scenarios, a first aid kit is even more essential. No matter what the cause of the disaster was, you are likely on your own when it comes to medical care. While this is hardly an ideal situation, having a well-stocked first aid kit can be the difference between life and death. Sure it's going to be hard trying to treat an injury on your own, but if you have the right supplies, you will at least have a chance at succeeding. You should also have a good supply of common medications in your first aid kit, as well as a supply of any prescription medications that you or a family needs on a regular basis.
One of the major problems that you will encounter during any major disaster is a disruption in the food supply chain. Within a few days of being deprived of food, people will panic and start to loot and riot. This is not a situation that you want to have to become involved in. You don't want to watch your children starve, and you don't want to endanger your well-being by being forced to fight angry mobs of people over scraps of food. When there are no stores to go to, no restaurants to visit, and no way to find more food in a conventional way you are going to be forced to figure out how to feed your family yourself.
The first step in doing this is to have a large stockpile of freeze dried foods, canned goods, dehydrated foods, and shelf stable dry goods. You must remember that any food that requires refrigeration will be completely useless in a situation like this since you probably won't have power. What if you have a generator? Well, that's great, but it's risky to use. Generators tend to be noisy and attract attention. During a major disaster, the last thing you want is to have anything draw attention to your home. You don't want anyone in the area to have any reason to think that you have food and other supplies in your home. If people figure out that you have food, then your home will suddenly become a target.
On top of having a good supply of food on hand, you should also consider planting a garden. Let's say that whatever disaster that strikes causes permanent changes in our way of life. With no more food distribution network, your stockpile isn't going to last that long. So you are going to need a means of replenishing what you use. Some people may consider hunting and foraging, but there's a major problem with this. That problem is that other people are going to have the same idea. This means you are much better off staying home and producing your food.
Is it perfectly natural to feel a sense of doom during a major disaster? You bet it is. But if you do this you will cause a lot of problems for both yourself and your family. When you panic you don't think clearly, which is a very bad thing during a major disaster. You need to keep calm and think rationally so you can take appropriate actions. You also need to remain strong so that your Wife and Children don't see how upset you are. If you let them a sense or see doubt in you, then it's going to have a big impact on their emotional well-being. Remember that as the man of the house it's up to you to protect and provide for your family. If they see weakness when they look into your eyes, it's quite possible that they will feel a sense of doom and despair.
It's one thing to know what to do; it's another thing entirely to be able to execute without making a mistake in the face of a true threat. Being able to make a quick decision and act on it can end up saving your life and the lives or your family. So take the time to practice, and bring them into it with you. For example, if you live in an area where earthquakes are common make sure that you have drills of what to do should one suddenly strike. Plan it out and practice that drill until it becomes second nature.
So it's finally happened. One of the many threats that can undermine our way of life has impacted our society. What comes next could range from protest and looting into full-on civil unrest and violence. Without the infrastructure that we all depend upon things will far apart quickly as people panic and desperately search for food and other supplies that they need to survive. It's going to be an ugly scene, and it's a scene you need to avoid. The only way you can avoid it is by planning. If you fail to do this, then you can brave the crowds and fight for scraps of food, or you can sit at home heartbroken as your children slowly succumb to starvation.
I don't know about the rest of you both either of those scenarios sounds like a total nightmare, and I want no part of either of them. That's why I am prepared. That's why I have barrels of drinking water stored in my home along with six months’ worth of emergency rations. That's why I have a well-stocked first aid kit, and why I practice and have had my children practice self-defense techniques. Is this the easy way to live? No, but what it is instead is a way to live in a greater sense, comfort, and peace of mind. You never know when a major disaster will strike. You could finish reading this and moments later be caught in the middle of a terrorist attack. The point is that if you want to survive any disaster, you need to be well prepared ahead of time.
You need to have a survival checklist that you put together after researching so that you can ensure that you have the supplies that you need. You need to practice disaster drills with your family, and make sure that you are always prepared for the worst, no matter when it may come. Living life in this way isn't easy; it's easier to be like everyone else and just assume that society will keep marching along as it always has. But to do that would be a mistake; you would be placing your family in danger. So make the smart choice and start training and preparing today.
