In our introductory article we spoke of the basics of a lifestyle and an approach to survival that relies upon all the fundamental, primal instincts and survival techniques that developed throughout the man’s earliest history, mainly through Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

Early, primitive lifestyles, the hunter – gatherer cultures and earliest flourishing of tools and weapons have so much to teach us, even in our modern, 21st century life filled with comforts and innovations. We continue to reflect on the ways of our earliest ancestors, the basics of survival and the paleo path.

The Benefits of the Primal Life

When we think of the early man, we need to realize an important fact. The insight into the perfected symbiosis between wilderness and the man, its offspring.

The millennia that passed have rendered the modern man into a vulnerable creature, weakened and prone to many hampering ailments. Our ancestors lived simpler lives. Hard and dangerous. Tough and merciless. Yet only through such life is how rugged men are created. Hard times create hard people.

Nothing stops us from following some of those steps in our everyday lives and our survival techniques. Nothing - except the comforts of civilization that we enjoy. Now, we’re not saying the Stone Age man was a fitness guru without ailments and aches. Their lives were short and brutal. Consider the diet of the early man, which was as natural as it could be. As basic as it could be. Even today, the rising trend of the so-called “Paleo Diet” offers us an insight in to their humble, but vitamin and mineral filled diet.  Venison, red meat and fish; Nuts, fowl and herbs. The best and purest sustenance that nature offered was the only choice for these hardened survivors.

Many books are becoming popular, dealing with a paleo-inspired diet in the modern day and age, and those who wish to, can easily attempt to better their diet. Consider some trivialities that we enjoy today, that couldn’t be had back then. Hot showers for example. Consider taking cold showers every now and then. Many people do, as their benefits are real. Many cultures today, like Finns and Russians practice icy baths regularly. Let’s agree – horizons must be broadened.

The Paleo-mindset

When reflecting with a wish to appreciate and understand the right mindset of an early man – we must understand the difference in lifestyles and their effect on the psyche. It is the very hardships that they went through, that gave them the proper world view of a survivor.

Constant necessity to move on, observe and co-exist with your nature, as well as fight for your life, creates a mindset without faults. It can be said that we will never attain the perfect mindset of a true survivor, unless life dictates that we become one through rigorous trials.

But to attempt to move towards that mindset is certainly possible. A first step towards strengthening yourself and raising your abilities for wilderness survival is to abandon comfort. Accept and embrace the ruggedness that comes with a life of bare necessities and tough environments.

Learning how to live and thrive with the most basic of tools and with minimal assistance from the outside world will quickly establish you on the path of the ultimate survivor.

Modern day Examples

Today, there are several examples and semi-accurate portrayals of such a “bare essentials”, primal way of survival.

Many persons attempted and tested their abilities by seemingly living off the land with the largest help being their hands and heads. One such example is the now famous YouTube channel called “Primitive Technology”, which perhaps perfectly embodies the aspect of which we write here. These, we’re confident to say, educational videos, portray with fascinating detail the abilities of the earliest, Paleolithic man.

The sheer complexity and success of the creations achieved in real time before our eyes, without the aid of even a single modern item, are awe inspiring. All the necessities of life, created with stone tools, wood and clay – the nature’s gifts. It shows the extent of the possibilities of man’s achievements without modern comforts. And so, we can safely recommend watching these popular videos as a form of education, and a useful insight into the views we wish to relate to the readers.

And always remember: sometimes, less is more!
